Chassis number identification in India

In India, the chassis number, also known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), is assigned to vehicles according to a standard format regulated by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). The process of assigning a chassis number follows these guidelines:

  1. Manufacturer Code: The first three characters represent the manufacturer code, assigned by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

  2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS): The next six characters provide information about the vehicle's model, body type, engine, and other specifications. This section varies across manufacturers.

  3. Check Digit: The ninth character is a check digit used to verify the accuracy of the VIN. It is calculated based on a specific algorithm.

  4. Model Year: The tenth character represents the model year of the vehicle. It can be a letter or a number, depending on the manufacturer's system. For example, 'A' might represent 2010, 'B' for 2011, and so on.

  5. Manufacturing Plant Code: The eleventh character denotes the manufacturing plant where the vehicle was produced.

  6. Sequential Number: The remaining characters, usually six or seven in number, represent a unique sequential serial number assigned by the manufacturer to each vehicle.

Together, these characters form the complete chassis number or VIN for a vehicle in India. It serves as a unique identifier for each vehicle and contains important information about its manufacturing details. It is typically found on the vehicle's chassis, engine bay, and various documents, such as the registration certificate, insurance papers, and owner's manual.
